Department of Geez Language(s) & Literature_ Amharic was established and begun its function in 2012 E.C under University of Gondar. The department has started its function by offering courses to Geez language and Literature major students in Bachelor of Arts degree in Extension and summer programs. The reason of Establishing this department is is to produce qualified manpower to the country and by using those Geez language experts to understand the long written knowledge that history, culture, medicine, astronomy and so, on. The third reason to produce Geez experts and teachers to develop this classical language in every level of schools. In this reason this syllabus aims at introducing students of Ge’əz with the major aspects of the literary and linguistic features of the language. The program will take four academic years for regular students and five years for those enrolled in the evening program. The second year is committed to equipping students with the basic skills in reading and understanding Ge‘ǝz. Besides acquiring some skills, students will also be introduced to the history of Ge’əz as well as to its relations with other languages both in Ethiopia and abroad. The third year will focus on intermediate skills and knowledge. Students shall reach near-perfect reading and understanding skills of basic Ge’əz texts that do not necessarily require deep reading of the major literary works. In relation to grammar, the third year will focus on intermediate Ge’əz grammar and prepare students for their senior years. The fourth year will focus on introducing the student with the diverse contents that the Ge’əz language exhibits. Poetry, history and other related courses will be Discussed and explained throughout the senior years of the student. Finally, students will be required to write a thesis on a subject of their choice within the Ge’əz literary, linguistic and cultural contexts.
