The DELL at UG has undefined developmental stages that range from the status of embedded department functioning as a supportive until which teaches common English courses to all students under the then basic sciences faculty of the Gondar University College. The University of Gondar was officially inaugurated in June 2000 and the English department was simultaneously upgraded to a full- fledged one.
The Department of English Language and Literature is one of the oldest departments in the College of Social Science and the Humanities in the University of Gondar. Since it was launched in 2004, the department has been producing efficient and competent under graduates working in different areas of social life-both in both private and governmental institutions. Currently, the department is offering courses related with linguistics, literature and English language skills.
As part of the requirements of producing trained and skilled human power in the nation, the department launched MA programs in Teaching English as Foreign Language (TEFL) in 2011, Literature in 2012 and Applied Linguistics and Communication in 2013 Scaling up its scope, the department came to open PhD programs in TEFL and English Literature in 2016 and 2018 respectively based on the needs assessment and the strong demand by MA graduates in the fields mentioned. Since then, the programs are being run under the department. Students specializing in TEFL have been basically taking courses related with teaching and learning in classroom contexts, which enable them to be proficient English language teachers, the courses in Literature are concerned with literary issues as depicted in different literary works in general terms and Applied Linguistics which is concerned with the structure and functions of language in social and institutional situations.
It is an established fact that Applied Linguistics is one of the fields of study in Linguistics. As the name also suggests, Applied Linguistics is particularly interested in addressing language related social problems in every communicative or interactional contexts at both micro and/or macro levels by drawing theoretical and methodological perspectives from a range of disciplines in the social sciences and the humanities.
Mission
The mission of the program is to offer quality education thereby to produce qualified professionals both at national and international levels and who are oriented towards job creation and be able to conduct problem solving research works and execute the research outcomes into practice.
Vision
The aim of this program is directed towards producing competent and qualified professionals who are equipped with the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge and skills of language and linguistics which would help them to investigate language and communication related societal problems.
